¿Qué niño es este?

Learn the lyrics to the Christmas hymn "¿Qué niño es este?" ("What child is this?").

This song asks who is the child in Mary's arms and answers that he is the Christ. 

Listen to the song. Read the lyrics and study the vocabulary. Notice that el coro means the chorus. Read the lesson on the verbs. Finally, sing along with the video.

Verbs in the affirmative imperative tense

In this song you will notice that several of the verbs are commands in the third-person plural (vosotros).

cantad <-- cantar : sing 

venid <-- venir: come

traed <-- traer : bring

The imperative tense is very easy to form for vosotros. When you are giving a command or directions to a group of people whom you know well, you drop the r from the infinitive form and add a d.

Example

cantar (the infinitive form)

--> canta-

           --> cantad (the command form)

You may have also noticed the ending of levantemos in the verse: "Un trono levantemos." This is the imperative form of nosotros.

Levantar is an -ar verb. In the nosotros form of the imperative tense,
   -ar verbs end in -emos
and
   -er and -ir verbs end in -amos.

Thus, the verse "Un trono levantemos" means "Let's raise a throne."

Listen to the Mexican-American singer Tatiana as she sings the Christmas hymn "Campana sobre Campana." The song describes the bells of Bethlehem bringing the shepherds the angels' news: the birth of Jesus.
