"Sale el sol" by Shakira + The Preterite

Grammar: El pretérito

This song describes several actions that occurred in the past. Hence, the verbs describing these actions are in the simple past tense, also known as the preterite (el pretérito).

Regular -ar verbs in the preterite

Regular verbs ending in -ar drop the -ar and use the following endings in the preterite tense.

-é	-amos
-aste	-asteis
-ó	-aron

For example, the verb llorar (to cry) has the following conjugation in the preterite tense.

Yo lloré	Nosotros lloramos
Tú lloraste	Vosotros llorasteis
Él lloró	Ellos lloraron

In the song, we hear the lyric: Te lloré hasta el extremo (I cried about you to the end.)

and

El miedo nos dejó sordos y ciegos (Fear left us deaf and blind).

Regular -er and -ir verbs in the preterite

Verbs ending in -er and -ir use the following endings in the preterite tense.

-í	-imos
-iste	-isteis
-ió	-ieron

For example the verb parecer (to seem) has the following conjugation in the preterite tense. 

Yo parecí	Nosotros parecimos
Tú pareciste	Vosotros parecisteis
Él pareció	Ellos parecieron

This verb appears in the preterite in the verse: Estas semanas sin verte me parecieron años (These weeks without seeing you seemed like years to me).

Irregular verbs

Some verbs follow different patterns in the preterite. We will only briefly look at two irregular verbs from this song: hacer and querer.

Here is the conjugation of hacer in the preterite.

Yo hice	Nosotros hicimos
Tú hiciste	Vosotros hicisteis
Él hizo	Ellos hicieron

In the song, Shakira say: [El miedo] nos hizo cometer estupideces (Fear made us do stupid things).

And now querer in the preterite.

Yo quise	Nosotros quisimos
Tú quisiste	Vosotros quisisteis
Él quiso	Ellos quisieron
