Grammar: El pretérito

This song describes several actions that occurred in the past. Hence, the verbs describing these actions are in the simple past tense, also known as the preterite (el pretérito).

Regular -ar verbs in the preterite

Regular verbs ending in -ar drop the -ar and use the following endings in the preterite tense.

-é	-amos
-aste	-asteis
-ó	-aron

For example, the verb llorar (to cry) has the following conjugation in the preterite tense.

For example the verb parecer (to seem) has the following conjugation in the preterite tense.

This verb appears in the preterite in the verse: Estas semanas sin verte me parecieron años (These weeks without seeing you seemed like years to me).

Irregular verbs

Some verbs follow different patterns in the preterite. We will only briefly look at two irregular verbs from this song: hacer and querer.

Here is the conjugation of hacer in the preterite.

Subjunctive

Let's look at a line from this song that includes two verbs in the subjunctive mood.

Nadie piensa en ti como lo hago hoy aunque te dé lo mismo

The first verb piensa is in the subjunctive mood because it is describing a hypothetical situation.

Why is this situation hypothetical?

The first part of the phrase says, "Nobody thinks about you like I do." Remember, we use the indicative mood when we are discussing something certain. We use the subjunctive mood we are stating something uncertain. 

If we are stating that an action is performed by no one but we do not know for sure that no one can perform this action, the situation is hypothetical. Hence, we express the action using the subjunctive mood. The subject pronoun nadie is followed by the indicative mood if it is certain that no one is performing the action. It is followed by the subjunctive mood if it is uncertain that no one is performing the action or can perform the action.

The verb dé (dar - to give) is also expressed in the subjunctive mood. The adverb aunque can be followed by the indicative mood if it is expressing a fact or by the subjunctive mood if it is expressing a supposition.

For example:

Aunque te dé lo mismo : Even though I can give you the same thing (Implying: I don't currently but I can)

Aunque te doy lo mismo : Even though I give you the same thing (Implying: I currently give you the same thing and that is a fact)
